AMD is in the mood to tease us of something coming soon, something to do with Vega and what it might hold. The event on January 5th might be very interesting indeed.
Vega teased, reveal at CES confirmed.
For the last couple of months there have been rumors circulating around AMD’s new upcoming GPU architecture. To date AMD have released Polaris as their newest GPU architecture back in June 2016; however today AMD has put out a teaser video with a countdown website with a humorous URL” ve.ga“. The countdown will stop on the 5th of January 2017, which is the start of the CES technology conference in Las Vegas. This ties into previously circulating rumors of a CES announcement for the new GPU.
Performance wise we don’t really know much as yet beyond what AMD have said and shown us at their Ryzen livestream. We can, however, extrapolate based on information from a few slides from the deep-learning focused Radeon Instinct project. The new GPUs are supposed to be marketed towards the enthusiast, targeting 4K resolution gaming at reasonable framerates.. During the livestream AMD demoed an upcoming Star Wars Battlefront mode running at 4k at more than 60FPS on a GPU based on Vega. Whether it’s going to be faster or slower than NVIDIA’s GTX 1080 or their Titan X is still unknown, so we’ll have to wait and see what precisely AMD has to show in four days.
