It’s been a long time since a proper single player battletech has been around. MechWarrior Online just doesn’t quite satisfy in the same way that the classics have, and Piranha games is listening to fans of the series. They’ve announced that they’re working on MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, a single player-focused game set inside the battletech universe.
MechWarrior 5 might be a freelance mech pilots dream come true
They aren’t being very specific about what they have aside from having a very nice looking trailer to introduce us to their new game. The story and even the game mechanics are still unknowns, but we feel that Piranha has had time to refine the mech fighting style over the years.
Visually it’s a fairly impressive upgrade over the current CryEngine-gased online game. They’ve opted instead to use the current version of the Unreal engine, which seems to give them more latitude for immersion compared to CryEngine 3.X they were using before. Why the switch in technology as opposed to evolving to CE 5? Certainly a good question. Regardless of why, Piranha does intend on giving you the full experience with a level of immersion that rivals any simulation game.
MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is in pre-alpha at the moment with a general 2018 release date. We’re curious if this game will give us a more in-depth glimpse into the invading Clans, and if you’ll get to be able to find contracts with them even. MechWarrior hasn’t quite received the attention it probably deserves, but that seems to be changing with Piranha games at the helm.
